La sequía extrema que azota a Europa en los últimos meses ha hecho que el caudal de los ríos llegue a uno de los niveles más bajos registrados en casi un siglo. Esta situación ha dejado al descubierto los cascos de más de 20 buques alemanes cargados de explosivos, hundidos en el río Danubio durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, cerca de la ciudad portuaria de Prahovo (Serbia). Estos barcos que pertenecían a la flota del mar Negro de Alemania se hundieron en 1944 cuando se retiraban del avance soviético, y ya desde aquella habían reducido la sección navegable en ese tramo a solo 100 metros, además de las toneladas de municiones y explosivos que se encuentran dentro de los buques. Aprovechando la ocasión el Gobierno serbio convocó una licitación para la extracción de los cascos y la retirada de municiones y explosivos, operación que se estima costará unos 30 millones de dólares. Un buque portacontenedores perteneciente a la agencia rusa de energía atómica Rosatom fue alcanzado por drones ucranianos en el Mar Negro. Fue blanco de un ataque con drones ucranianos.
