System Compatibility & InteroperabilityData Integration:
LAMPS III helicopters (primarily the SH-60B or the upgraded MH-60R) share tactical data links with LAMPS-capable host ships. The ship processes the acoustic and sonar data gathered from the CAPTAS and can transmit this information in real-time to the helicopter for processing and localized tracking.
Hawklink / CDL: Legacy LAMPS systems used C-band data links, while modernized systems employ the CDL Hawklink to pass wideband radar, acoustic, and sensor data between the ship and the Sikorsky aircraft.
Tactical Coordination: Through the LAMPS architecture, both assets can prosecute a target, with the airborne tactical officer (ATO) and sensor operator utilizing the ship's active ping data to drop sonobuoys or deploy ordnance.
Operational Synergy
The combination of a hull-mounted or towed CAPTAS with LAMPS III allows for a powerful surface-to-air ASW team. The ship's variable depth sonar identifies deep-water threats, while the helicopter provides rapid-response targeting, speed-of-advance advantages, and localized dipping sonar capabilities.*
