Italian aerospace firm Leonardo has entered the race for the Philippine Air Force’s (PAF) acquisition program, offering up to 32 Eurofighter Typhoon Tranche 5 jets.
Constantino Pravini Rosati, Leonardo’s vice president for Eurofighter Typhoon exports, confirmed in an interview with Aviation Week that the Eurofighter Consortium tapped the company in 2023 to lead the Philippine campaign after the PAF issued a Request for Information.
He said the Typhoon package is tailored to fit the PAF’s budget for 40 aircraft, and comes with one of the most comprehensive weapons suites ever proposed to Manila — including MBDA’s Meteor beyond-visual-range missile, ASRAAM short-range missile, Brimstone air-to-ground missile, and Storm Shadow cruise missile.
The deal would be structured under a government-to-government (G2G) framework with financing options that allow Manila to stagger payments.

Speaking yesterday at the Defense and Security Equipment International (DSEI) 2025 exhibition in London, Paul Smith, BAE Systems head of Typhoon Strategy Delivery, said that APKWS II was being assessed with a view to providing the Typhoon with a low-cost weapon for the counter-uncrewed air system (C-UAS) role.

BAE expects to receive a first pre-production-standard example of the AESA radar during 2027, ahead of ground-based work to be followed by flight-testing from later the same year.
...
Meanwhile, BAE plans to fly its self-funded large-area display (LAD) enhancement for the Typhoon, which it hopes to include as part of a mid-life upgrade activity for the type.“As part of our investment, we are looking at getting that display into the air,” Smith confirms.
He notes that the LAD – which was included within a cockpit demonstrator at DSEI – has been selected by Eurofighter partner nations Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK “as the technical maturation focus for LTE [long-term evolution]”.

Defence Minister Maria Eagle provided the answers on 1 September.
In response on retirement timelines, Eagle stated that “the planned out-of-service dates for the RAF’s fleet of Typhoon aircraft are given below: Tranche 1, 2027; Tranche 2, 2040; Tranche 3, 2040.” She added that “the RAF does not have any Typhoon Tranche 3A aircraft.”
The answers also revealed the extent of disposals from the earliest generation of the fighter. Eagle confirmed that “26 of the 30 Tranche 1 Typhoon aircraft have been scrapped as of 1 July 2025; this equates to 87% of the Tranche 1 fleet.” The remaining Tranche 1 airframes will leave service within the next two years.
Providing a snapshot of the operational fleet, Eagle set out that “the table below details the number of Typhoon aircraft currently in service with the Royal Air Force. Tranche 1 – 4; Tranche 2 – 67; Tranche 3 – 40. The Royal Air Force does not have any Tranche 3A Typhoon aircraft.”
Taken together, the answers show that while the RAF’s Typhoon force still totals more than 110 aircraft, its operational strength is now concentrated in the newer tranches. The four surviving Tranche 1s are due to be retired by 2027, while Tranche 2 and Tranche 3 fleets are planned to remain in service until 2040.

On September 9, Spanish Eurofighters scrambled three times in rapid succession to shadow an Ilyushin Il-76MD-90A transport plane, a Tupolev Tu-154 passenger aircraft repurposed for military logistics, and an Ilyushin Il-20 reconnaissance platform, all departing Kaliningrad northward without transponders activated, pre-filed flight plans, or responses to air traffic control queries. These "dark flights," as they are termed in aviation circles, not only contravene the Chicago Convention on International Civil Aviation but also heighten collision risks over the crowded Baltic Sea corridors. Earlier that week, on September 10, two additional scrambles targeted unidentified objects mimicking drone flight profiles, one over Lithuanian territory and another breaching Latvian airspace, though visual contact was lost before interception. August saw a comparatively quieter period with just three Baltic Sea track reconnaissance sorties, but the September uptick aligns with broader NATO reports of over 300 annual intercepts across Europe, many concentrated in this volatile theater.
