Airbus had already demonstrated the A400M’s ability to refuel helicopters in flight. Still, moving from an industrial qualification to a military qualification can take several months or even years. For the French Air Force, this process began in June 2023 with preliminary tests carried out by the Air Warfare Centre (Centre d’Expertise Aérien Militaire) and the French Defence procurement Agency (DGA). Two further test campaigns followed in February and March 2024. In early 2025, the capability was deemed fully mature, and the Air and Space Force is now authorised to refuel its H225M Caracal helicopters in flight from its A400Ms in operations. France will eventually have five helicopter refuelling kits that can be adapted for the A400M. “Giving the A400M this capability was a remarkable achievement,” explains Lieutenant Colonel Nicolas, A400M officer for the French Air and Space Force. “Imagine an aircraft with a maximum weight of 140 tonnes flying close to its stall speed of 110 knots so that it can match a helicopter’s speed.”

According to the Air Force pilot, it is the A400M’s excellent electronic flight controls that make this feat possible. Airbus had to update the A400M’s flight control systems to adapt them to this very specific flight regime. The refuelling pods and handles were also specially adapted for helicopters. With the A400M and H225M, the French Air and Space Force has projection capabilities that are virtually unmatched worldwide. This is all the more impressive given that the H225M can be loaded onto the A400M and deployed anywhere in the world in a matter of hours. The Air Force can therefore quickly deploy both aircraft to carry out operations deep behind enemy lines, whether that involves deploying commandos or recovering ejected pilots. These capabilities far exceed what was predicted in theory, as was clearly demonstrated very recently during Exercise Athena, which took place from 12 to 23 May 2025 and saw the winning A400M Atlas - H225M Caracal duo in action for the first time in such an exercise.

The project will acquire platforms, associated ancillaries and cover test, evaluation, and integration with both aircraft and boats. The system will enable home and overseas commitments held at extremely-high and very-high readiness.

The Belgian Ministry of Defence has approved the purchase of 240 single-use parachutes, valued at €2.1 million, for humanitarian aid drops, such as a recent operation over Gaza.

During Defence’s first humanitarian mission over Gaza in 2024, named “Operation Cerulean Skies,” reusable parachutes were used, significantly depleting existing stock.

To address this shortfall, Defence tested 15 disposable parachutes last year, Low Cost Aerial Delivery Systems (LCADS), which proved to work seamlessly with the A400M transport aircraft.

Inicialmente, Francia se había comprometido a adquirir cincuenta aviones de transporte táctico A400M Atlas de Airbus. Este desarrollo resulta aún más necesario dado que esta aeronave, cuya plena capacidad operativa se declaró el pasado junio tras la validación de sus capacidades tácticas, tendrá otras misiones asignadas en el futuro.La mención de un radar pasivo aerotransportado es interesante… porque esta capacidad ha sido objeto de trabajo por parte del Laboratorio Aeroespacial Francés [ONERA] y el Centro de Investigación de la Academia del Aire y del Espacio Francesa [CREA] desde 2013. Availability: Following significant enhancements to the engine support arrangements, through the DE&S managed Availability Improvement Programme Phase 3 (AIP3), there is now a full Fleet fit of serviceable engines for the first time since 2022. The increased availability of engines has enabled the recovery of three long term unserviceable aircraft and work continues to recover a fourth long term unserviceable aircraft. Availability has gradually increased and stabilised due to the recovery of these aircraft.

Other significant work to increase availability, under AIP3, aims to increase output to 12 Task Lines by Q4 2027.

In our letter of 23 June 2025, it was reported that the number of ‘Fit for Purpose’ (FFP) aircraft per day had risen from an average of 9.4 per day in 2023, to an average of 10.1 per day in Jul 24. In the latest full month, September 2025, availability was measured at 8.5 FFP aircraft. However, it should be noted that the calculation of availability changed in FY24/25, accounting for a reduction of ~1 FFP ac per day, and this was referenced in the June 2025 update. As of FY 25/26 an aircraft is Fit For Purpose (FFP) if it undertook a sortie or was otherwise serviceable and available for tasking for 10 consecutive hours within a 24-hour period. In previous years, the FFP availability for tasking was based on 4 consecutive hours.

In spite of the apparent reduction in availability it should be noted that output in flying hours (FH), arguably a more object measure of output, continues to increase, corroborating the broadly improving picture. In FY24/25 the output was circa 9,300FH whereas in FY25/26 the current projection is 9,600FH. Moreover, the overall health of the Fleet has significantly improved since 2024 through significant enhancements to engine availability and the subsequent recovery of 4 long-term unserviceable aircraft which will underpin future output growth. To this end, it is anticipated that average availability will increase beyond 9 by the end of October 2025 towards the longer-term goal to deliver 12 Task Lines sustainably by Q4 2027.

Resumiendo, Tienen unas 9 unidades operativas de media sobre un total de 22 (41%). Acaban de recuperar 4 unidades que llevaban bastante tiempo fuera de servicio por culpa de los motores, mientras que su objetivo para 2027 es tener 12 unidades listas.

Si nos aplicamos la misma métrica (41%), deberíamos andar rozando las seis unidades operativas de media.
