The largest military parachute jump conducted in the United Kingdom for more than a decade has demonstrated, with clarity and purpose, the strength of cooperation between the British Army and the Royal Air Force.
Earlier this week, approximately 270 soldiers from 16 Air Assault Brigade executed a coordinated airborne operation over Salisbury Plain, descending from three RAF A400M transport aircraft flying at 800 feet.
A fourth aircraft delivered a further 24 tonnes of essential equipment and supplies, ensuring that troops on the ground could fight and sustain themselves effectively. The entire operation was launched from RAF Brize Norton, home of the RAF’s Air Mobility Force.

First to be dropped are the heavier stores – javelin anti-tank missiles and 81mm mortars – that an individual cannot carry. These are released adjacent to the troops, ensuring paratroopers never land on the same drop zone.
Just 40 seconds later, the next aircraft is sighted, and soon a cascade of parachutes litters the skies above.
Upon landing, personnel adopt a technique known as the parachute landing fall, designed to distribute the force across the body to prevent injury. Essentially, a tight body position with feet and knees together, landing on the balls of the feet first, and a controlled roll.

He said the deployment of 276 parachutists, four aircraft, 24 tonnes of freight, all in under 30 minutes, had gone to plan, highlighting the importance of these operations in a conflict theatre."We can deliver a company, two or three hundred soldiers at two days' readiness," he explained. "We could deliver the best part of a battlegroup, some 1,000 soldiers, at five days' readiness.
"And the best part of a brigade, up to 5,000 soldiers, in about 20 days. Very high readiness – and we're ready for anything."

Further to our letter of 19 September 2025 about A400M in-service performance, I am pleased to be able to provide you and the Committee with a further update.Capability: A400M Atlas capability expansion continues, with tactical datalink now inservice and further air despatch trials underway to establish its capability as the primary tactical airlift platform for the Royal Air Force (RAF). Operational integration of low-level parachuting is progressing well through force generation of the Joint Airborne Task Force.
Following the agreement for the final contracted build standard and Block 0 upgrade, requirements for the subsequent upgrade (Block 1) are now under negotiation. The Department is leading a coherent, cross government export effort, with industry stepping up its posture and HMG establishing a dedicated, RAF supported, campaign construct. This will be essential to drive new opportunities and protect the UK’s strategic stake in the programme.
Availability: At the last update it was reported that enhancements to the engine support arrangements as part of Availability Improvement Programme Phase 3 (AIP3) had yielded significant benefits. This trend has continued, enabling the recovery of the final two long-term unserviceable aircraft, resulting in the Actual Operating Fleet increasing to a historic high of sixteen aircraft. Every aircraft is typically at five days readiness or better.
Since the September 2025 update, availability has steadily increased and in the latest full month, January 2026, availability was measured as ten Fit for Purpose (FFP) aircraft per day. This represents a 35% increase in availability since January 2025 when it was 7.4 FFP aircraft per day. Due to the improving availability, it has been agreed that Defence will increase the number of aircraft available for worldwide tasking from 8 Task Lines to 9, in March 2026 on a pathway towards the longer-term goal to deliver 12 Task Lines sustainably by Q4 2027.
Output in Fleet Flying Hours (FH) has also steadily increased throughout the year from 697 FH in January 2025 to 912 FH in January 2026, a 31% increase. In FY24/25 the output in FHs was circa 9,300 FH whereas it is currently projected to reach approximately 9,800 FH in FY25/26 with an aspiration to approach 11,000 FH in FY 26/27. It is anticipated the increase in output will be achieved through further AIP3 initiatives.

Se conocera como el pack PMS (Parallel Mission System), añade capacidades ISR y C2, para convertir el A400M en un centro de mando donde coordinar de operaciones entre tropas, cazas, drones y otros medios, control de drones lanzados desde la bodega de carga.
Esto se une a los planes actuales ya en desarrollo de aumentar la carga a 40tn, generadores de interferencias (jammer) de larga distancia o el kit antiincendios.
A ver si al final 27 se nos haran pocos...

En febrero, Gerd Weber, director del programa A400M de Airbus, declaró a Bloomberg que se estaba desarrollando un proyecto para transformar el Atlas en una "nave nodriza" capaz de lanzar cincuenta drones para misiones de ataque de largo alcance. Este proyecto se estaba llevando a cabo para un cliente misterioso que prefirió no revelar.
Dos meses después, entrevistado por Europäische Sicherheit & Technik [ESUT] con motivo de la entrega del 53.º y último A400M a la Fuerza Aérea Alemana, el Sr. Weber habló un poco más sobre este proyecto, sin revelar, sin embargo, el nombre del "cliente misterioso" para quien se está llevando a cabo.
Por lo tanto, además de drones, el A400M también debería ser capaz de lanzar misiles de crucero de largo alcance.

La referencia al misil Taurus sugiere que esta capacidad se está desarrollando para Alemania. Sin embargo, el Sr. Weber sin duda intentaba ocultar sus huellas. Varios indicios apuntan a que este "cliente misterioso" no es otro que la Fuerza Aérea y Espacial Francesa.

Además, el Jefe del Estado Mayor de la Fuerza Aérea y Espacial [CEMAAE], el general Jérôme Bellanger, confirmó este hecho durante una audiencia en la Asamblea Nacional el 14 de abril.“En el combate aéreo, dominar el ritmo es fundamental. […] El tiempo es un multiplicador de fuerza. Si se usa mal, se convierte en un factor de vulnerabilidad. Dominar el ritmo implica tener en cuenta el desarrollo de capacidades al ritmo de la guerra. Por lo tanto, significa diseñar nuestros sistemas de armas, control y mando según una arquitectura abierta por naturaleza para poder adaptarlos a diario”, enfatizó el general Bellanger.
«Lo hicimos en el Mirage 2000D [con el estándar RMV] y también lo haremos en el A400M, con el "sistema de misión de panel", que nos permitirá integrar rápidamente nuevas capacidades en su bodega de carga», indicó a continuación. «La bodega de carga», concluyó, «es realmente el sistema de combate del A400M».

Paris, France – 16 June 2026 – Airbus Defence and Space has signed a contract with OCCAR (Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation), acting on behalf of the French Directorate General of Armaments (DGA), for the development of new capabilities for the A400M. These upgrades, known as the “Parallel Mission System” (PMS), aim to equip French A400M with multi-mission capabilities in the fields of intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR).
“The A400M is a true Swiss Army knife for the armed forces that use it. It has the capabilities and potential to continue expanding the scope of its missions,” said Jean-Brice Dumont, Executive Vice President Air Power at Airbus Defence and Space. “With this development, the French Air and Space Force is acquiring an aircraft capable of becoming a tactical command and control (C2) tool in the air.”
The PMS developments focus on the integration of a new mission system on board, as well as tactical situational awareness consoles installed in the cargo hold to monitor various sensors and coordinate missions. They also aim to integrate an optronic sensor onto the aircraft.
This new mission system is designed to integrate additional sensors and communication systems, as well as to manage drones and missiles launched from the aircraft’s cargo hold. Ultimately, the aircraft crew will be able to coordinate missions involving ground troops, helicopters – notably the Tiger and Caracal H225M – and fighter jets in a collaborative combat mode.
Following a development phase, the new equipment will be installed on board the first French A400M in 2027 and tested in flight in 2028. A number of aircraft in the Air and Space Force fleet will then be retrofitted to accommodate a PMS kit.
Furthermore, Airbus Defence and Space is already exploring the development of other capabilities for the A400M, such as long-range jamming, a mother-ship function for the in-flight release of drones and missiles, an increase in payload capacity to 40 tonnes, and finally firefighting capabilities.
