There's a good discussion of the US mission, design, series (MDS) designation system at http://www.designation-systems.net/usmi ... craft.html.
Based on the MDS system, the official designations for the F-16 are F-16A, F-16B, F-16C, F-16D, F-16E, F-16F, etc. The additional suffix letter (e.g. G, C, M) was conceived to designate the technical order series associated with differing blocks of aircraft. For example, Block 40 and 42 aircraft used to be covered by the CG series of tech orders. Block 50 and 52 aircraft used to be covered by the CJ series of tech orders. After the CCIP mod, the USAF Block 40, 42, 50, and 52 aircraft are now covered by the CM series of technical orders. The use of the additional suffix letter as an aircraft designation is also common.
