Iraqi Army to receive additional Bell 407 Scout helicopters from US
16 January 2013
The US Army has provided three additional Bell Helicopter-built 407 Scout helicopters with associated services to the Iraqi Army Aviation Command.
Encompassing spares parts, ground support equipment and tools and logistical aircraft maintenance support, the delivery represents the sixth completed shipment of Iraqi Armed 407 Scout helicopter under a foreign military sales (FMS) contract signed with Iraq in 2009.
Covering a total delivery of 24 armed Bell 407 helicopters, along with logistical support services, including pilot training, the contract was awarded in an effort to build an advanced, dependable capability in the Iraqi Army Aviation Command, eventually ensuring peace and security in the country.
US Army Security Assistance Command Central Command region operations deputy director Kevin Richardson said the delivery was a result of collaborative efforts between many organisations in and outside of Redstone Arsenal and the helicopters would be thoroughly evaluated prior to actual delivery to Iraq."We are building partner capacity, which means the Iraqi's are building their own capability that allows them to perform operations that the US is no longer there to provide," Richardson added.
US Army Aviation and Missile Command source Kenneth Morgan said the helicopters would also be operated for internal requirements, such as patrol and security missions, as well as border security operations.
The first batch of three T-407 helicopters was delivered to the Iraqi Army in December 2011, to train pilots in operation and maintenance of the helicopters.
Equipped with intelligence and data-link capabilities, the Bell 407 is a single-engine multipurpose utility helicopter, designed to support Iraqi military intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) and counter-terrorism operations

Iraq orders Mi-28 attack helicopters

Moscow and Baghdad have reached a major weapons deal for the first time since the fall of Saddam Hussein's regime, with the $4.2 billion-plus pact including the purchase of 30 Mil Mi-28 attack helicopters.
An agreement to buy the aircraft and 42 Pantsir air defence systems was reached during an official visit to the Russian capital by Iraqi prime minister Nouri al-Maliki, according to a report by the RIA Novosti news agency.
Iraq attempted to acquire an export version of the Mi-28A several years ago, but the deal was cancelled.
The Russian air force is the lone operator of the Mi-28, and plans to eventually field 200 of the type. The service has an active fleet of 64 N-model examples, as recorded by Flightglobal's Ascend Online Fleets database.
Russian Helicopters
Iraq traditionally purchased much of its military equipment from Russia, with roughly $30.5 billion having been spent over 30 years during the Soviet era. Its previous deals included around 1,000 fixed-wing aircraft and almost 350 helicopters, plus air-defence systems, ground vehicles and warships.
Among Baghdad's reasons for resuming orders are that the Iraqi armed forces are used to using Russian equipment, and a desire to diversify its weapons suppliers. Most of the aircraft ordered since Hussein's removal from power have been sourced from the USA.
It is also seeking to restore ties with Moscow due to instability in the Middle East, including civil war in neighbouring Syria and the international isolation of Iran.
