UK launches next phase of UAS Heavy Lift challenge
The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has launched Phase 2 of the Unmanned Aerial Systems Heavy Lift Capability (UASHLC) challenge.
According to the pre-qualification questionnaire (PQQ) published on 5 August, the MoD is seeking to “support and inform the development of maritime operating concepts and enable assessment, analysis, exploration, and evaluation of the use of UAS for beyond-visual-line-of-sight (BVLOS) payload delivery and broader UAS capabilities”. The MoD is therefore seeking to accelerate the development of one or more suppliers' platforms, as well as the key technologies that will enhance UAS operational capabilities.
The closing date for suppliers to submit a PQQ is 5 September, with a contract expected to run from September 2022 to August 2027, the MoD said. Up to GBP95 million (USD116

China test-flies ‘improved' carrierborne UAV
12 August 2022
With several design changes and potentially a new engine, the AR-500CJ appears to be larger than the AR-500C variant, which first flew in 2020. However, AVIC has not disclosed the dimensions of the AR-500CJ.
China has claimed the successful test-flying of a new vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) intended for service aboard the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy's larger surface vessels. This includes aircraft carriers.
The aircraft was developed by the company's China Helicopter Research and Development Institute (CHRDI). According to AVIC, the AR-500CJ is a “comprehensive improvement” over the earlier lightweight AR-500B shipborne UAV developed by the company.

Baykar Makina Has 3-Year Order Backlog
Turkey’s Baykar, which provides Ukraine with unmanned aerial vehicles, says it currently has the capacity to build 20 drones a month and a three-year order backlog.
“TB2 and Akinci drones are in serial production, we have demand for both of them,” Haluk Bayraktar, the privately-owned company’s chief executive officer, said in an interview with the Ukrainian Come Back Alive Foundation on Thursday. “For Bayraktar TB2, we have export contracts with 22 different countries.”
Baykar, which is also working on an unmanned fighter project called the Bayraktar Kizilelma, wants to further increase its production capacity and hopes to achieve that with a plant in Ukraine.
Bayraktar, the brother of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s son-in-law, Selcuk Bayraktar, said the company wants to assemble TB2 and Akinci drones as well as Kizilelma fighters in Ukraine.
Construction of a research facility and advanced production center is already under way, he said, adding,
“We see Ukraine as our strategic partner. We also want to make Ukraine a manufacturing base.”
Turkey has managed to stay close to both Ukraine and Russia this year as it looks to mediate rather than choose sides in the war after President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine in February. Even as Baykar supplies armed drones to Ukraine and foresees a factory there, Turkey’s exports to Russia hit an eight-year high of $2.9 billion in the first half of 2023.
In a recent interview with the newspaper RBC, Ukraine’s envoy to Turkey said a Bayraktar TB2 factory could be producing drones as soon as late 2023.
Kyiv has received 50 TB2 drones since the Russian invasion, Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov said in June.
Korean Air to help develop stealthy loyal wingman UAVs
Seoul has named Korean Air as the “preferred bidder” in a programme to develop a low observable UAVs that will work with manned aircraft in combat. The programme falls under the auspices of an Agency for Defense Development (ADD) programme to develop “stealth UAV squadrons. The ADD began developing the UAV squadron in November last year and has completed the basic design,” says Korean Air.
“The agency plans to work on the detailed design with Korean Air... will develop a manned-unmanned teaming system in which one manned aircraft and three to four stealth UAVs can carry out missions simultaneously. In addition to supporting manned aircraft, the UAVs will be able to perform missions on their own, such as surveillance electronic warfare, and even kinetic attacks.
In October last year, Korean Air secured a government contract from the Korea Institute for Defense Technology Planning and Advancement (KRIT) to develop a low observable UAV to advance South Korea’s stealth technology. The project involves producing a UAV that aids the development of radar absorbing materials and a low observable shape that can be applied to future UAVs. This followed previous work as part of the ADD’s stealth UAV programme from 2019 to August 2021.
