COINCIDENTE SET A FOX: Armado de RPAs clase I

French Navy Orders Additional Airbus Maritime Drones
As part of the SMDM contract (“Systèmes de Mini Drones aériens embarqués de la Marine”), Survey Copter, an SME and Airbus subsidiary supplier of light tactical UAS has signed an additional order with the French Defence Procurement Agency (DGA) to supply the French Navy with 15 onboard systems (30 aircraft) of Aliaca fixed-wing electric UAS, plus associated training and integrated logistics support. These new systems will be delivered from 2024 onwards, and will be used to equip new ships.
This additional order is part of the SMDM contract signed in 2020 with the DGA, which covered the initial supply of 11 systems (22 aircraft), associated training and integrated logistical support, intended to equip a first typology of vessels such as the high seas patrol boats (PHM), the new overseas patrol boats (POM) and the surveillance frigates (FS).

Drone that Killed US Troops in Jordan Likely Went Undetected
U.S. forces probably did not detect the approach of the Iranian-made drone that killed three American soldiers last week at a remote base in Jordan, and there was no air defense system on site capable of shooting it down, the military’s initial assessment of the attack has found.
The early findings, which have not been previously reported, indicate that the drone may have been missed “due to its low flight path,” a U.S. defense official with direct knowledge of the assessment told The Washington Post. Additionally, this person said, the base, known as Tower 22, was not outfitted with weapons that can “kill” aerial threats like drones, and instead relied on electronic warfare systems designed to disable them or disrupt their path to a target.
A common strategy among drone operators and other pilots seeking to minimize or evade radar detection is to fly low to the ground. Another U.S. official affirmed the military’s belief that the drone flew too low to be detected. Both officials, like some others, spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive and ongoing investigation. Defense officials have stressed that assessments can change as investigators learn more.
Taken together, the preliminary findings appear to undermine previous assertions that U.S. air defenses mistook the attacking aircraft for an American drone returning to the base about the same time, and they raise new questions about the Pentagon’s ability to keep pace with the threats facing U.S. personnel deployed

Pentagon downplays vulnerability of US bases to drone attack
The Pentagon is downplaying the vulnerability of US bases in the Middle East to air attack, following a fatal drone strike against an American outpost in Jordan. That attack on 28 January killed three US Army troops at a support base along the Syrian border known as Tower 22, also dozens of traumatic brain injuries and at least one cardiac arrest. The base’s troop barracks was impacted by an explosively armed one-way UAV. Although an investigation into the Tower 22 attack is still underway, initial reports indicate the enemy drone may have been able to penetrate local air defences by flying closely behind an American UAV preparing to land at the facility.
However the deadly feat was accomplished, the Pentagon says its air defences remain highly effective against threats in the region.
“For a majority, those attacks have been unsuccessful,” deputy Pentagon press secretary Sabrina Singh said on 6 February.
The Pentagon says there have been more than 160 attacks similar to the Tower 22 incursion against US bases in the Middle East during recent months.
Although the casualties in Jordan, the Pentagon still describes its air defences as “largely successful”.
“Our air defenses have been able to catch or been able to destroy any impact or any incoming … whether it be rockets or drones at bases,” says Singh.
US bases employ a variety of air defence measures, tailored for the local threat environment.
Facilities in the Middle East typically use a short-range system called the Raytheon Counter-Rocket, Artillery, Mortar (C-RAM) to defend against rocket and UAV attacks.
The C-RAM is a land-based version of the radar-guided Phalanx cannon that defends US Navy ships. The M61 Vulcan cannon used on both the Phalanx and C-RAM systems is also the same family of gun found on the F-22, F-16 and F-15 fighters.
The US Army has also begun deploying the Raytheon Coyote UAV interceptor. The tube-launched, expendable UAV.
The army last December announced a major acquisition of the Coyote system, with plans to purchase some 6,700 interceptors. Defence start-up Anduril is offering a competing platform, which it calls the Roadrunner.
It remains unclear what protective measures were in place at Tower 22 at the time of the 28 January attack.
The Pentagon has said it will not disclose what tactical changes are being made in the wake of that incident, citing operational security.

US Army cancels FARA helicopter program, makes other cuts in major aviation shakeup
In addition to halting the FARA competition, service leaders want to end UH-60 V Blackhawk production, postpone moving the Improved Turbine Engine Program into production, and phase out legacy drones [Raven y Shadow]
The US Army is cancelling its next generation Future Attack Reconnaissance Aircraft (FARA) program, service officials announced today, taking a potential multi-billion-dollar contract off the table and throwing the service’s long-term aviation plans into doubt.
...
The reason for ending FARA, Army leaders told a small group of reporters ahead of the announcement, is a reflection of what war looks like in the modern era.
“We absolutely are paying attention [to world events] and adjusting, because we could go to war tonight, this weekend,” head of Army Futures Command Gen. James Rainey told reporters at the Pentagon on Thursday.
“We are learning from the battlefield — especially Ukraine — that aerial reconnaissance has fundamentally changed,” Army Chief Gen. Randy George said in a press release. “Sensors and weapons mounted on a variety of unmanned systems and in space are more ubiquitous, further reaching and more inexpensive than ever before.”
...
While observations from places like Ukraine and Gaza are part of the impetus for FARA’s cancellation, the need to free up billions of dollars to invest in unmanned systems was also a prime factor, Rainey and other aviation leaders explained.
...
- Additional investments for developing and buying unmanned aerial reconnaissance systems like the future tactical unmanned systems and launched effects.
...
Unmanned Focus
While FARA may be dead, Army leaders still envision a future with aviators in a cockpit, at least for now. But in the short term, they need to spend more on unmanned capabilities.
For now, that future will not include the legacy Shadow and Raven unmanned aerial systems. Instead the Army wants to funnel dollars toward future tactical unmanned systems.

BAE Systems has unveiled its latest attritable autonomous collaborative platform (ACP) based on the company’s “Concept 2” at this year’s World Defense Show in Riyadh
The latest design includes a new wing shape and low-observable features. The changes consider new wing assembly and production approaches, using electrical instead of hydraulic actuation systems. The company’s “Concept 2” system debuted at the Royal International Air Tattoo in 2022 and featured a main-wing and wide V-tail configuration.
Sacrificial Aerial Systems: unmanned fighter planes have a shorter lifespan of just a few hundred hours than crewed fighter planes, which can last thousands of hours. In addition, electrical actuators are more suitable for unmanned fighter planes as they can spend most of their life in a storage container.

Russia’s Purchase Price for Iranian Shahed-136 Drones Revealed
A hacker group called the Prana Network broke into the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps’ (IRGC) email servers and grabbed data on the sale of Shahed drones to Russia. Its delta-winged Shahed-131/136 variants are believed to have a range of approximately 500 to 900 miles.
according to the internal Sahara Thunder documents seized and published by the Prana group two days after the Guardian documents show that a single Shahed costs $375,000 to produce. The hack also revealed that Russia and Iran negotiated a lower per unit price for a bulk buy. An agreement conveyed in the documents set forth a price of $193,000 per Shahed for a 6,000 unit buy. A smaller order of 2,000 units would yield a $290,000 per Shaded sticker price. The two countries reportedly agreed to the larger buy, netting the Iranian government $1.8 billion from the sale after the addition of licensing fees.

Russia Offers Jet-Powered Shahed Drones for Sale at $1.4M
Russian industries are already promoting Shahed as their development and exhibited it at World Defense Show 2024 in Saudi Arabia
Awhile ago, the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine revealed the production volumes of Shahed-136 loitering munitions in Russia and the set deadline for full localization of this product by the Russia defense industry. As of today, they have at least two working assembly lines making these attack drones but the only component they are capable of producing fully on their own is the airframe: the capacity is 330-350 units a month. The Russians expect to achieve a full cycle of local manufacture by 2026.
In Russian promos, the loitering munition is called MS 236 (Shahed-136) attack drone, according to the materials it has an electro-optical guidance system (“target selection by the operator”) and an internal combustion engine. The declared flight range is up to 2000 km, and the maximum take-off weight is 250 kg, including the warhead of 50 kg.
Side note, Defense Express previously reported that Russians have changed the Shahed-136 warhead three times already. Other specs are: cruising speed is 170 km/h, flight duration is 12 hours, and maximum altitude is 4,500 m
The pictures show an MS 237 (Shahed-238) shooting down a hostile MQ-9 Reaper and its image in the thermal spectrum, apparently indicating a capability to initiate hit-to-kill interception by utilizing an alternative heat seeker to lock on the engines of enemy drones.
As for the Russians, they put a price tag of $1.4 million per MS 237 (Shahed-238) and $3.75 million for a mobile control point, which can hardly be called “cheap.” This fact essentially nullifies the whole concept of such drones: they must be as cheap as possible in the first place.

Turkey's drone maker Baykar begins to build plant in Ukraine
Turkish defence company Baykar has started building a factory near Kyiv that will employ around 500 people and where it will manufacture either its TB2 or TB3 drone models, the company's chief executive told Reuters.
"Our factory is being built… we need about 12 months to finish construction and then we will move on to internal machinery, equipment, and organizational structure," Baykar CEO Haluk Bayraktar said on the sidelines of the World Defense Show in Riyadh.
Bayraktar noted that capacity would total around 120 units every year
Bayraktar said that, looking at the current year, the firm planned to double domestic production of the Akinci, which stood at 36 units in 2023, while TB2 output would stay unchanged at 230 units.
It also aims to produce the new models of the Kizilelma and the TB3 drones "in the tens," he added.

Merlin bringing uncrewed flight capabilities to USAF's KC-135
The agreement tasks Merlin with designing, integrating, testing and demonstrating aspects of their “Merlin Pilot” system on a KC-135 with plans to conduct flight demonstrations within the year.
The Boston-based start-up describes the multi-year partnership with Air Mobility Command and Air Force Materiel Command as “a stepwise approach, starting with reducing crew workload, then proceeding to reduced-crew operations”.
Air Mobility Command manages a fleet of nearly 400 KC-135s. Efforts are underway to modernise and replace the USAF’s ageing air tankers, which average more than 60 years old, according to Cirium fleets data. But a requirement included in the 2024 defence spending bill prevents the retirement of any KC-135s and bars the USAF from deciding on how to replace the ageing refueller, until it produces a plan to procure a next-generation stealth tanker.
The KC-135 would be the sixth aircraft to be equipped with Merlin Pilot, along with the Beechcraft King Air, De Havilland Canada Twin Otter, Cessna Caravan, Rutan Long-EZ and Cozy Mark IV.
