The Mk1 offers more Electronic Assistance Measures (ESM) and electronic warfare functions compared to the Captor-E, while detection and target acquisition are also improved. Other notable features include UHR-SAR (Ultra High Resolution Imaging SAR) and target detection through STAP processing.
In terms of technological developments, there are two main differences: a fully digital multi-channel receiver that Hensoldt has been working on for some time; and new transmit and receive modules that offer a higher frequency range and a wider bandwidth. Both properties are necessary for greater mobility within the frequency band and for better radar reconnaissance capabilities.
Both new radar configurations can be integrated into the same airframe (from Tranche 2) so that customers can decide which radar to choose. You can also choose to switch to a different configuration during the update cycles, and future export campaigns are expected to compete for radar.
Take the lead
An important part of the Mk1 project will come from Hensoldt’s experience as a leading radar company in Germany and his involvement in both the mechanical Captor-M radar and the Captor-E AESA for the Typhoon. For the latter, it already supplies antenna, receiver and processor components as well as other electronics. Although the company has extensive experience in the field of radar and especially in the development of the Captor program, Hensoldt will for the first time take the lead in fire control radar.
