Lockheed Martin Corp. and Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Co., Fort Worth, Texas, are awarded a not-to-exceed $173,164,400 modification to a previously awarded, fixed-price-incentive-firm-target advance acquisition contract (N00019-20-C-0009). Work will be performed in Fort Worth, Texas (30%); El Segundo, California (25%); Warton, United Kingdom (20%); Orlando, Florida (10%); Nashua, New Hampshire (5%); Cameri, Italy (5%); and Baltimore, Maryland (5%). This modification procures long lead materials, parts, components and support necessary to maintain on-time production and delivery of Lot 15 F-35 aircraft for the Navy, Marine Corps and government of Italy. Work is expected to be complete by December 2023. Fiscal 2020 aircraft procurement (Navy) funds in the amount of $53,064,400; and non-Department of Defense participant funds in the amount of $120,100,000 will be obligated at time of award, none of which will expire at the end of the current fiscal year. The Naval Air Systems Command, Patuxent River, Maryland, is the contracting activity.

F-35s from Hill’s 4th Fighter Squadron deployed to Al Dhafra Air Base, United Arab Emirates, for six months last year. The jets almost instantly began conducting airstrikes while 70 percent of the fleet was able to conduct its mission, said Brig. Gen. David Abba, director of the Air Force’s F-35 Integration Office. By the end of the deployment, that rate had climbed to more than 90 percent.

The jets flew 1,300 combat sorties over about 7,300 combat hours, and employed about 150 weapons. All bombs worked as planned without aircrew errors or weapon system malfunctions.

“The numbers are pretty remarkable,” Abba said.

The squadron was able to increase the mission-capable rate with a cadre of inexperienced maintainers. Hill AFB is has more than it needs of the most junior maintainers, so that those Airmen can spread across the operational units as they hone their skills, Abba said.

Other notable missions during the deployment included flying alongside F-15Es and firing more than 40 tons of weapons at an island held by the Islamic State group in the Euphrates River. During another mission, two F-35As flying together sensed an advanced surface-to-air missile in the distance, geolocated it, and took a radar map of it for targetable coordinates, Abba said. While the F-35s didn’t bomb the SAM, the jets offered feedback to intelligence and command-and-control personnel, he said.

Alaska's first

On 10 March 2020, the first F-35A Lightning II for the 356th Fighter Squadron, 354th Fighter Wing at Eielson AFB (AK) was sighted by aviation friend Matt Ellis at Lockheed Martin's plant Fort Worth (TX).

Marked as the '354OG' flagship, Lightning 18-5345/AK has now (for yet unknown reasons) black tail markings attached (others before have grey markings).

The 356th Tactical Fighter Squadron flew the A-10 Thunderbolt II from Myrtle Beach AFB (SC). Immediately after returning from Saudi Arabia, where the unit was dispersed to as of Operation Desert Storm, the unit began phasing down with the designated BRAC 1990 closure of Myrtle Beach AFB and the pending inactivation of its host Wing. The squadron was inactivated 10 June 1992. The squadron was reactivated as 356th FS on 10 October 2019 at Eielson Air Force Base (AK), to be equipped with the F-35A Lightning II.

Esto puede cambiarlo todo en un futuro. No parece sostenible en el tiempo que los socios del proyecto no puedan tener acceso libre al software y que un cliente si lo tenga. Y si los socios lo tienen en el futuro los clientes también lo demandarán, por mucho que eso tenga un coste asociado.
