Curiosas vueltas que da la vida. Cuando se creó el programa ASMS (1963, "Advanced Surface Missile System") que luego daría lugar al AEGIS, se estableció un proyecto conjunto con el US Army, que tenía a su vez el SAM-D (que luego daría lugar al Patriot), para tratar de aunar esfuerzos. Por supuesto, todo esto estaba bajo la tutela de McNamara:

However, before the project could get started, it was diverted by then Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara’s drive for commonality between the services. At that time the US Army was in the advanced study phase of their new air defense system called SAM-D (later to become the PATRIOT System). The Army and the Navy were directed to investigate the potential commonality between ASMS and SAM-D. Even though initial studies indicated no significant commonality between the preferred systems of each, the Director of Defense Research and Engineering (DDR&E) directed that a joint Army/Navy project office be set up. The competing contractors for SAM-D (Raytheon and RCA) were directed to propose an Army only design of SAM-D and a common (Army/Navy) system that could also be used by the Navy. It was not until 1967, when Raytheon was selected as the development contractor for SAM-D, and the source selection board determined that a common system would involve increased cost and complexity with no increase in capability, that the Navy was allowed to go forward with a separate program.
