Portman Continues Fight For Lima Tank Plant & Workers
Meets with Moroccan Ambassador to U.S. and Urges Consideration of Lima for Assistance through Defense Industry Adjustment Program
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-Ohio) today met with Moroccan Ambassador to the United States Rachad Bouhlal to discuss the potential M1A1 Abrams tank sale to the Moroccan Armed Forces. The vehicles would replace Morocco’s aging tank fleet and also provide additional production to the Joint Systems Manufacturing Center (JSMC) and the Abrams tank industrial base throughout the country. Foreign Military Sales are a critical component to maintaining sufficient Abrams production levels until the U.S. Army expects to begin ramping back up Abrams production.
“The United States and Morocco both benefit from a strong economic, political, and military relationship, and I am committed to strengthening this alliance,” said Portman. “I am pleased that the Moroccan government is looking to further build upon this relationship by procuring the Ohio-built Abrams tank. Ambassador Bouhlal and I had a good discussion and he was particularly impressed by the reputation of Ohio’s advanced manufacturing. I remain concerned with the Army’s plan to rely solely on these foreign sales, but I’ll continue doing what I can to help with this process. It’s important for us and our allies.”
