"Honestly, I'm still baffled about what this is suppose to do? What role would it perform? anyone had any ideas?"

While not specifically this vehicle, I think this sort of "Mini Mobile Artillery" could be very useful in certain roles.

Benefits:

-Cheap and simple, allowing many to be built with minimal investment risk vs a more sophisticated vehicle; weapon semi-disposable for 1 way, high risk missions.

-Powerful and versatile weapon capable of engaging light armored vehicles, buildings, equipment, and personel

-Can be transported quickly to remote areas by helicopter, or even parachuted in.

-Small enough to be easily hidden from aerial surveillance

-Simple and cheap enough to be given as "military aid" to local allies.

--> You have a weapon with the power of a formidable Armored Fighting Vehicle, but with the cost and size of a Jeep.

Uses:

-Rapidly seizing and defending territory. For example, an airfield or oil refinery in Africa. A couple of helicopters could fly in, land, and deploy infantry, while another couple of helicopters would deploy these MMA's. MMA's would be used to defend the territory from any AFV's / Technicals from the host government sent into to retake their airfield until a larger support force of Chinese can begin landing.

-Remote outposts. An MMA could be deployed to a remote firebase/outpost on the frontier that is only accessible by helicopter. The troops on the ground can then manouver the gun into position to provide overwatch / defense as needed. They can also be wheeled along on 'patrol' for short distances.

-Insurgency/Proxy War. Large numbers of MMA's could be given to friendly insurgents to frustrate and attack invasion forces. Essentially factory produced "super technicals," they are small enough to be hidden in a civilian garage, or driven into a forest path, and then deployed as a nasty surprise.

Looking more into 40mm CTA, this little MMA would be quite dangerous:

http://www.cta-international.com/v2/the ... /gpr-ab-t/

Programable airburst / point detonate shell. Can be used in airburst mode against infantry and slow aircraft, or point detonate to punch through up to 21cm/ 8" of reinforced concrete. 980g/2.16lb shell at 3,200fps with 2.5km range.

http://www.cta-international.com/v2/the ... /apfsds-t/

Tungsten Flechette capable of defeating 14cm/5.5" of Steel at 1500m - capable of punching through most AFV's.

With those two shells, you have a very versatile and effective weapon. Being able to deploy one of these rapidly by helicopter, and then move it around?

Honestly I think this little thing is pretty ingenious.

Russia’s Tank Drone Performed Poorly in Syria
The Uran-9 lost contact with its controllers, maneuvered badly on broken terrain.

The results are in on the Russia’s Uran-9 combat drone and its baptism of fire, and it isn’t good. Uran-9, bristling with guns and missiles, may look impressive but it has trouble with the fundamentals not only of armored warfare but warfare by remote control. The remote controlled combat vehicle lost contact with ground control stations, suffered from an unreliable gun and suspension system, and could not target enemies while on the move.

The problems were brought to light at a Russian security conference, “Actual Problems of Protection and Security” at the N.G. Kuznetsov Naval Academy in St. Petersberg. A.P. Anisimov, Senior Research Officer, the 3rd Central Research Institute of the Russian Defence Ministry, reported on Russia’s recent deployment of the Uran-9 unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) to Syria, where it had its combat debut. The results were summarized online at Defence Blog.

Introduced in 2016, Uran-9 is designed as an unmanned fire support vehicle for the Russian Ground Forces. The UGV is 16.7 feet long and weighs approximately 10 tons. Uran 9 packs some serious firepower, with one 30mm 2A72 automatic cannon and four 9M120-1 Ataka anti-tank guided missiles. The result is a vehicle that is theoretically deadly to troops on foot, light armored vehicles, and even main battle tanks.

The reality is tha Uran-9 is a hot mess. One of the most serious problems, of which there are many, is the vehicle is on a short tether, on average capable of straying only 1,000 to 1,600 feet from its manned control station. Uran-9 lost contact with the control station 19 times--17 times for a minute or less, and at least in one case up to 1.5 hours. The problem was exacerbated in urban fighting centers with buildings blocking the radio signal.

Uran-9 is a tracked vehicle, with tracks instead of road wheels. The rollers and suspension that keep the vehicle running smoothly were rated of low reliability and required field repairs. This is surprising considering that Russia has a large armored vehicle force using tracks, including the new T-14 Armata tank, T-90MS tank, and BMP series combat vehicles. However the contractor, JSC 766 UPTK, largely sticks to unmanned systems--including an unmanned version of the new “Tigr-M” armored vehicle.

The remote fire control system is also a problem, with the 2A72 experiencing a lag before firing six times and an outright failure once. Another problem with the Uran is that the armament, optics, and sensors aren’t stabilized for firing on the move, requiring the vehicle to stop first.

Uran-9’s combat experience in Syria revealed serious problems with the system. That having been said, the UGV was not a vital part of the fighting and the whole point of sending the systems to a combat zone was to expose flaws that might not show up in peacetime. Uran-9 might be a failure, but the concept itself is promising. If Russia’s defense industry can fix the problems Moscow could have a dependable, lethal robot on its hands and a real threat to NATO forces.

https://www.infodefensa.com/es/2018/11/ ... fensa.html
Integrated Unmanned Ground System (UGS)
Adopted on 19 November 2018
Estonia, Belgium, Czechia, Spain, France, Latvia, Hungary, Netherlands, Poland, Finland

The objective is to develop a Modular Unmanned Ground System with the following capabilities:
• Multi-mission capable platform to carry different payloads (transport, ISR, tethered UAV etc.) and sensors,
• Cyber secure autonomous navigation capability for route and mission planning with different options for manned-unmanned teaming,
• EW resilient Command & Control interface capable of swarming and interoperable with existing C4 systems.

Y claro, tzahal no va a hacer despliegues internacionales...
