Realidad virtual y realidad aumentada

https://www.army.mil/article/243505/iva ... pabilities

“In the past, as the Soldier in the back who's going to actually be dismounting on the objective you may have a single screen to look at that can maybe toggle between the driver’s view or the commander's view, or the gunners view, or perhaps you're looking through periscope blocks or asking the crew themselves what is actually happening around you,” said SFC Joshua Braly, SL CFT. “But overall when you are buttoned up in the back of a platform you have very limited situational awareness to what you’re walking into.”

Beyond the original problem set, IVAS is looking to be applied to an additional capability gap in order to allow the mounted and dismounted Soldier to maintain both C2 and visual situational awareness seamlessly across Army vehicle platforms.

Soldiers from 1-2 SBCT and 3rd Infantry Division joined the multi-dimensional team to learn IVAS and provide feedback on what would be most operationally effective as the technology integrates onto larger platforms.

SOLDIER EXPERIENCE

“I struggled when I was a squad leader getting out of the bay not knowing where I was because we get dropped at different spots in the op order,” said SGT John Martin, Bradley Master Gunner from 3rd Infantry Division. “Not having information on the ground was definitely a challenge that tripped us up.”

The squads took turns in the Stryker and Bradley vehicles testing each camera view and function, power management, communications, and the ease of mounting and dismounting with the IVAS. The Soldiers quickly saw that the capabilities being developed for dismounted Soldiers via IVAS are amplified by integrating the system into platforms using World View, 360 degree, and See capabilities that leverage the view of external sensors to be transmitted to the Heads Up Display (HUD) of each individual Soldier.

“There’s always a line between the squads and the tracks, and having this equipment is going to help tie them in so the dismounts in the back can see the actual optics of the vehicle itself and then they can seamlessly work with the crew because everyone can see around the vehicle without actually having to step outside of it,” said Martin. “It has countless uses like land navigation, being able to track things while on the battlefield, moving through urban complexes, moving through open terrain, it’s insane.”

Each Soldier with IVAS can “see through” the vehicle to what its external sensors are feeding into the individual HUDs, as if the vehicle has invisible armor. Soldiers with the Stryker Brigade Combat Team understood the implications to not only C2 situational awareness management and safety, but also overall lethality of the force.

“This changes how we operate honestly,” said SGT Philip Bartel with 1-2 SBCT. “Now guys aren't hanging out of vehicles in dangerous situations trying to get views on what's going on. Leadership will be able to maneuver their elements and get view-on-target without having to leave the safety of their armored vehicles. Maneuvering elements with that kind of information will minimize casualties and will overall drastically change how we operate and increase our effectiveness on the battlefield.”

Re: Realidad virtual y realidad aumentada

HoloLens for 120,000 Army personnel: Microsoft inks $21.9 billion deal
Was originally pegged at $480 million in 2018, follows scrutiny over other DOD deals.

On Wednesday, the US Army formally moved forward with the largest ever government-related deal for headsets in the virtual and augmented reality sector: a 10-year agreement with Microsoft to provide 120,000 headsets "based" on the HoloLens line.

Reports by CNBC and Bloomberg point to a $21.9 billion value for this week's updated arrangement, following its initial announcement in November 2018. Neither of those reports point to exact reasons for the deal's jump from an initial contract value of $480 million, despite that earlier deal confirming similarly high headset numbers.

The headset model in question, as revealed by Microsoft's Alex Kipman in a Wednesday blog post, appears to deviate slightly from its originally announced intent. While it's still known as the Integrated Visual Augmentation System (IVAS) and includes an array of HoloLens-like sensors, the model seen in today's announcement appears to attach to a helmet. Ars previously reported that Microsoft and the US Army intended for this headset to not require mounting on a helmet, arguably to increase its applicability.

Otherwise, we assume the headset's goals still align with previously known plans to amplify "Lethality, Mobility, and Situational Awareness," whether in training or in combat. The enterprise-only HoloLens 2 has already improved on crucial technical fronts, particularly the "field of view" for virtual screen elements, while the IVAS will include military-grade features previously announced, such as thermal and night vision cameras, visual target acquisition, vitality sensors, and a system that can detect if wearers suffer concussions.

Intriguingly, the Army's Wednesday announcement confirms the most video game-like feature yet for a HoloLens-derived headset: "a life-like mixed reality training environment." Such a combat simulator would technically count as the first official gun-combat "game" for any HoloLens product, since the hardware has largely not been aimed at gamers—even though it will likely require compatible "controllers" like real-world guns. (Hence, such a simulator is probably out of most users' reach.) [...]

Re: Realidad virtual y realidad aumentada

Army Makes Gargantuan Bet On New Augmented Reality Goggles For Its Soldiers

The U.S. Army recently awarded a massive contract, which could ultimately be worth close to $22 billion over the next decade, to Microsoft for the production of new augmented reality vision systems. These helmet-mounted systems feature advanced sensor fusion capabilities, similar to those found on the latest generations of night vision and other image-enhancing optics. In addition, they will have the ability to project a wide array of data piped in from various sources, including off-board platforms, providing improved situational awareness and other potentially game-changing benefits to troops in the field.

The Army announced the deal for production of what it calls the Integrated Visual Augmentation System (IVAS) on March 31, 2021, but said that it had actually been signed five days earlier. The contract includes "a five year Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ)-like ordering period" and "five one-year options for CLS [contractor logistics support]," with "a potential agreement ceiling of $21.88B," the service told Breaking Defense.

[...]

"The IVAS aggregates multiple technologies into an architecture that allows the Soldier to Fight, Rehearse, and Train using a single platform," the Army said in its March 31 press release. "The suite of capabilities leverages existing high-resolution night, thermal, and Soldier-borne sensors integrated into a unified Heads Up Display to provide the improved situational awareness, target engagement, and informed decision-making necessary to achieve overmatch against current and future adversaries."

[...]

The initial IVAS prototype variants, also known as Capability Set 1 and 2, or CS1 and CS2, were effectively HoloLenses with some modifications to meet the Army's requirements. Those systems proved to not be robust enough for military use, notably being unable to work in the rain. Since 2019, the current version, known as Capability Set 3 (CS3), is much more rugged and was just recently put through cold weather testing in Alaska.

[...]

IVAS can also pipe in a video feed from a suitable optic mounted on a rifle, carbine, or a machine gun, giving personnel a way to peer around corners or into other hard-to-reach areas without first having to expose themselves to any significant degree to possible enemy fire. In the same way, sensor feeds from off-board platforms, including video cameras mounted on manned or unmanned aircraft, including tiny drones that individual soldiers can deploy themselves, as well as ground vehicles, can be projected right onto the visor.

[...]

the combination of IVAS with the cameras mounted on the vehicles allowed troops in the rear compartment to "see" through the hull to was happening outside. This is similar to how the Distributed Aperture System (DAS) works on the F-35.

[...]

The big additional capability that IVAS brings to the table is its augmented reality functionality. This means additional data can be projected onto the visor, such as map information and waypoints, locations of potential enemy forces or innocent bystanders, and more. The way IVAS is designed, that kind of symbology could be presented in a way that appears more directly overlaid on the object in question, such as a building or other terrain feature, rather than simply an icon on a flat screen.

"The system also leverages augmented reality and machine learning to enable a life-like mixed reality training environment so the CCF can rehearse before engaging any adversaries," the Army noted in its press release. What the service is talking about here is developing capabilities so that simulated opponents and other objects, including vehicles or buildings, can be virtually inserted into actual live training exercises

Augmented reality training holds the promise of being able to conduct larger-scale exercises involving a wider array of enemy capabilities without having to physically simulate every aspect of an exercise. This, in turn, presents potential cost savings and opens up the possibility of using less robust facilities for more complicated training.
