Recoil-free machine gun RMK 30

The development of a recoil-free, fully automatic cannon was initiated by the Federal Ministry of Defense and the BWB. This resulted in the RMK 30 project of the Mauser factory in 1993, which was designed for use in helicopters and light weapon carriers (Wiesel).
The principle of a recoil-free weapon is widely known to everyone, after all it is used in every rocket launcher, but also in the American recoil-free 106 mm M40RR. However, all previous approaches were only suitable for launching single fires (multiple rocket launchers such as Katjusha or LARS / MARS only fire single fires!). With the RMK 30, Mauser has therefore developed a weapon that is currently unique and that can fire fully recoil-free both fully automatically and in volley mode. The first fully functional prototype was tested on November 4, 1996 at the Heuberg military training area (Baden-Württemberg). For this purpose the RMK 30 was mounted on the light armored weapon carrier "Wiesel". Once the tests have been successfully completed, series production is expected to begin in 2001.
The basic idea of ??the new development is that the combustion gases are expelled at the rear end of the weapon and thus compensate for the recoil that results from the acceleration of the projectile. So you use a mixture of rocket launcher and normal machine gun and combine their advantages.

The resulting muzzle energy is, contrary to what one might expect, above the level of the conventional and comparable machine guns used so far:

This effect arose during development through the use of ever better drives and fuels. The cartridge itself is caseless and burns largely without residue. It is inserted from the front into the turret chamber, tried and tested at Mauser, in order to make the RMK 30 more compact.

A recoil-free weapon can of course be used for the same tasks as its "normal" counterparts. However, it has the same installation restrictions as all rocket launchers: Due to the gas emission at the rear end, a large safety zone is required behind the weapon, so it cannot be installed in the interior of vehicles. However, the question of how to draw off the gases and redirect them without danger to people is already being dealt with. Until then, the ideal field of application is limited to external loads, for example in the weapon tower of the "Wiesel" or as a gun for the Tiger attack helicopter. The great advantage of the design lies in the accuracy, which is not affected by the low pipe return. So the ammunition consumption can be minimized and additional storage space is free,
However, the effectiveness of the RMK 30 would be severely restricted if it were not integrated into an autonomous fire control system that works independently of the equipment on the weapon platform (helicopter, tank, ...). The target is prevented from escaping by a fire control computer and various subsystems (thermal imager, laser rangefinder, target tracking / detection, ...). One speaks of an "Assign and Forget" weapon system: The target is only assigned by the pilot / weapon leader and automatically destroyed. (similar to the "Fire and Forget" system). Due to the excellent precision in connection with the weapon system, the weapon does not have to have high rates of fire (quality instead of quantity). Great importance was attached to this control system during development: If the accuracy of the weapon is much better than the system, the target will be lost when fired. Conversely, ammunition consumption increases disproportionately. That means the weapon is only effective in conjunction with the electronics.
On the German side, installation in the new attack helicopter UH-Tiger is considered very likely. The RMK 30 is intended to combat sudden air targets within 1,500 m (too close for missiles). To do this, it must have the accuracy of a guided missile and at the same time be as small and light as possible.
During the development, existing technologies borrowed. The weapon itself was derived from a rocket launcher, the ammunition of rocket engines and the targeting system have been adopted and improved by guided missiles. The entire fire control system achieves a precision of 0.7 mrad at 1,000 m, the system including the weapon reaches 1.5 mrad (= circle with a radius of 1.5 m). This revolutionary accuracy can effectively intercept an air target with just three cartridges. The range of applications is very wide because the weapon combines the characteristics of a machine gun (high rate of fire) and a guided missile (accuracy).
