VTG to Supply C-UAS Laser to Five US Destroyers

VTG, a provider of force modernization and digital transformation solutions, announced that it has been selected by the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Port Hueneme Division, a field activity of the Naval Sea Systems Command, to equip more ships in the U.S. Fleet with an innovative laser designed to counter threats from unmanned aerial systems.

Under the prime, single-award contract, VTG will install and integrate the AN/SEQ-4 Optical Dazzler Interdictor, Navy (ODIN), a directed energy weapon, aboard five U.S. Navy Arleigh Burke-class destroyers.

In 2020, VTG successfully integrated the ODIN laser aboard the USS Stockdale (DDG 106) and USS Spruance (DDG 111) through a separate sole-source contract, completing both projects on time and on budget, and setting the standard for future directed energy weapon installations aboard U.S. Navy ships.



ODIN, a member of the Navy Laser Family of Systems, is a laser used to counter adversary UAS-mounted intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities. This laser for the optical dazzling of adversaries’ long-range and very long-range surveillance systems is being developed and built by the government at NSWC Dahlgren Division, and rapidly fielded to meet an urgent Fleet need. The ODIN laser will be employed on surface combatants to counter asymmetric threats and to provide a scalable response for escalation of force.

MZA Associates Corp.,* Albuquerque, New Mexico, is awarded an $18,697,835 cost-plus-fixed-fee contract for the counter unmanned aerial vehicle (C-UAS) High Energy Laser Weapon System (HELWS). The contractor will design, develop, deliver, integrate, test and demonstrate a compact, portable, low-cost and reliable C-UAS HELWS using the latest available commercial components. The University of Missouri Kansas City, Kansas City, Missouri, is awarded a $39,489,484 cost reimbursement contract for the Pulsed Tactical Effector for Regulated Attack (PTERA). The PTERA program seeks to primarily develop families of electronic effector and support technologies at the system, component and sub-component level that enable new Navy missions when placed aboard and/or in concert with Group 1 through 3 unmanned aerial vehicles. Work will be performed in Kansas City, Missouri, with an expected completion date of Aug. 29, 2026. The total cumulative value of this contract, including a 60-month base period and eight 54-month option periods that will run concurrently with the base period, is $39,489,484. Although Lockheed Martin does not specify the AHEL’s power rating, the Air Force has repeatedly indicated that it would be about 60 kilowatts. This would be in line with the company’s own statements that this weapon is of “the same class” as the HELIOS laser, developed for the Navy, collects The Drive.

The US Air Force is also implementing the tender based on the Self-Protection High Energy Laser Demonstrator (ShiELD) program. The development plan includes three types of laser systems for fighters: target designators, defense lasers and lasers for the destruction of other aircraft.
