All Creatures Great And Small At Trident Juncture

...The low end of the range included Belgian and Portuguese bomb sniffing dogs and German pack animals.
German mountain infantry brought eight mules in special vehicles from Bad Reichenhall in Bavaria to the San Gregorio training area in northern Spain to carry heavy weapons like grenade launchers and 120 mm mortars. The terrain in the exercise area is hilly but not mountainous like in Bavaria, so it must have been easier for the mules to carry loads weighing over 60 kilograms.
The Portuguese static display on the Troia peninsula included a seven-year-old German Shepherd and a frisky three-year-old Labrador. The Labrador is a bomb sniffing dog and the German Shepherd is used for more traditional K9 tasks.
